Ksar Ghilane is an oasis in the Tunisian part of the Sahara desert. It is also well-known for its spring and ruins of the Roman fort. It is a must-see for a day or overnight stay in one of the tents. With its geographical location, just two hours’ drive from Douz, and the mesmerizing color of the dunes, Ksar Ghilane is a great place to have a dip into the mysterious desert for an incredible adventure.
Ksar Ghilane is also the living place for several nomadic families that dwell modestly on animal breeding, dates’ cultivation, and camel walks which is something they are very proud of. Settled here because of their children’s education, they are nomads by heart as many of them had chosen the desert over modern life. These families are often hired by tourist agencies for organizing small camel hikes. These “desert lovers” faithful to their traditions are experts in their trade and will invite you to discover and share their lifestyle, values, and their world. Going to the desert, it’s like going on a lifetime adventure.
The oasis has its own water source and visitors to the Ksar Ghilane can even take a swim in its warming waters. You will also enjoy sandy landscapes and the freshness of the place. There are three camps with Berber tents available and a luxury hotel offering around sixty air-conditioned tents will make your stay a true Arabian story. You can even pull your bed outside the tent and experience sleeping under the stars. Make sure to have a camel ride back at sunset while the dunes are miraculously lit. Wandering around the oasis in the morning will leave you with a wonderful feeling of serenity and peace. Ksar Ghilane is a laid back and relaxing place.
