Our Highlights of Mauritania tour is designed to explore many of Mauritania’s best historical and cultural attractions highlights located throughout the country.
The tour will begin its journey with an immersive authentic camping experience in the Sahara Desert. You will travel throughout Mauritania to visit all four of its ancient cities including Chinguetti, Ouadane, Tichit and Oualata. Finish the tour with a drive through the enchanting coastline of Mauritania and the Banc d’Arguin National Park while marvelling at its beautiful wildlife.

Here are some highlights of what you will see and experience on the Highlights of Mauritania Tour










Upon arrival in the Nouakchott capital, you will be welcomed by your tour guide at the airport and transferred to your hotel.
If you have an early arrival, you can explore Nouakchott including the Al Khaima City Center, Fish Market and the Souvenir Market. Meals are not included on this day, but can be arranged at hotels or restaurants as needed.

After breakfast at the hotel, embark on a drive toward the Kiffa area. A freshly prepared lunch will be served along the way.
Arrive in Kiffa, which is one of the gateways into the Sahara Desert. A freshly cooked dinner will be served. Your comfortable campsite will be setup to enjoy night camping under the stars. This outdoor camping experience under a canvas of starlit skies will be an unparalleled and unforgettable experience.

Breakfast will be served prior to departure from Kiffa. We will proceed to the picturesque town of Nema, where our team will provide lunch en-route. Upon arrival in Nema, we will spend the evening in a hotel, where dinner will be served.

After breakfast at the hotel, depart Nema and travel toward the ancient city of Oualata. A fresh lunch will be served en route.
Upon arrival at Oualata, you will have a guided tour to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site with its unique architecture and design.
Your campsite will be set up in the desert outside Oualata for night camping. Dinner will be served.

Following breakfast at the campsite, depart Oualata and head toward Al Makhrougat. Lunch will be served en route. Your next destination is the Elephant Mountain, which is a famous rock formation resembling the shape of an elephant, hence the name “Roca del elefante” (Elephant Rock) in Spanish.
Your campsite will be set up in Al Makhrougat for an overnight under the spectacular Sahara sky. Dinner will be freshly cooked and served to you.

This morning, you will take breakfast and then depart to the UNESCO Heritage city of Tichit located along the Trans-Saharan trade route. Lunch will be served en route.
Upon arrival to Tichit, you will have a guided tour of this ancient caravan city that was established in the 12th century as an important caravan stop linking Oualata to Chinguetti. This small and isolated town has retained much of its traditional charm and cultural heritage. You will see its inhabitants are still living in traditional homes made using mud and stone.
A campsite will be set up outside Tichit where you will have dinner and spend the night.

After breakfast at the campsite, depart Tichit and head towards the Desert of Zik. A freshly prepared lunch will be served en route. An outdoor campsite will be set up where you can experience a Sahara Desert adventure with dinner served and outdoor camping under the stars.

Followng breakfast at the campsite, drive to the town of Tidjikja, which is the capital of the Tagant region of Central Mauritania.
Next, you will explore the ancient ruins of Rachid situated atop a cliff overlooking the oued, surrounded by palm groves. The remnants of ancient mud homes in the old town are worth exploring. Fresh meals will be provided by our team thorughout the day. In the evening, you will enjoy a night of camping under the stars in Maaden Oasis.

This morning, breakfast will be served at your campsite. Afterward, you will leave the Maaden Oasis and head toward Chinguetti. You will make a stop at the Terjeit Oasis where you will enjoy a picnic lunch in amidst the oasis’s tranquility.
After lunch, depart for the Mhairth Oasis, one of the largest oases in the Adrar region. The oasis is elegantly surrounded by palm groves and situated amidst the harmonious blend of rocks and sand dunes. If time permits, you will have the opportunity to indulge in leisurely swimming or relaxation amidst the lush landscape of the desert.
When you are ready, depart for the ancient city of Chinguetti. This ancient city is known as a historic trading post, a noted Islamic scholarly centre, and a former gathering place for pilgrims on their way to Mecca. Spend time exploring this UNESCO Wolrd Heritage Site. Spend the night and have dinner in a basic guesthouse.

Following breakfast at the guesthouse, travel along the ancient trans-Saharan caravan trade route until you reach the oasis of Tanouchert. Here you will take a brief break in a nomadic tent.
Next, continue along the caravan trade route towards Ouadane. Continue your journey toward the Richat Structure, also known as “the Eye of Africa”. This is a colossal circular landmark that is visible from space. Return to Ouadane where you will have dinner and spend the night in a guesthouse.

After breakfast, you will visit the Canyon of Amogjar in the Adrar plateau. From this vantage point, you will be captivated by the breataking panoramic view of the canyon. Next, you will visit the nearby Agrour Amogjar to explore a collection of ancient neolithic rock paintings. The journey will continue towards Choum, with a lunch break taken along the way.
Travel to the famous Ben Amera monolith located near the Western Sahara border. This is Africa’s largest monolith, and the world’s second largest monolith. You will also visit the lesser Ben Aisha monolith located nearby. Walk alongside the base of Ben Aisha to marvel at the many rock carvings and rock sculptures created by a dozen international artists in 1999 to celebrate the millennium. An outdoor campsite will be prepared, and a delectable dinner will be served under the starlit sky. Spend the night camping at the base of the monolith, immersing yourself in the tranquility of nature.

This morning, you may want to wake up early to watch the sunrise peaking out from behind Ben Amera with its glorious rays.
After breakfast, you will travel westbound toward the Banc d’Arguin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There is a chance you may see the famous Iron Ore train passing by during the day. Lunch will be served along the way.
You will arrive in the Banc d’Arguin National Park in the evening. Make your way to Cape Tafarit to enjoy dinner and experience the tranquility of camping under the starlit sky in nomadic tents.

Begin your day with a breakfast at Tafarit. Afterwards, travel to Iwik to embark on a short sailing excursion with traditional Imragen fishing boats. The sailboat will take you on a voyage to nearby islands for birdwatching.
Return to the shore and make a stopover at Nouamgar to observe the pink flamingos. A picnic lunch is served during the travel back to Nouakchott before the evening. You will have dinner and spend the night in a hotel or guesthouse.

Breakfast will be at the hotel or guesthouse. If you have a late departure, you can visit explore Nouakchott and surrounding sites. Lunch and dinner are not included on this day but can be arranged at a restaurant in Nouakchott as needed.
You will be transferred to the Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport for departure.
