Our Explore Mauritania tour will take you across the Sahara Desert to the Atlantic Coast in search of Mauritania’s ancient history and its most beautiful sceneries. You will visit the majestic Sahara Desert to climb massive sand dunes, ride a camel, and swim in a desert oasis. You will also embark on a historic journey through time and uncover the fascinating history of the ancient cities of Chinguetti and Ouadane. Finish the tour with a drive through the enchanting coastline of Mauritania and the Banc d’Arguin National Park while marvelling at its beautiful wildlife.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Nouakchott

Upon arrival in the Nouakchott capital, you will be welcomed by your tour guide at the airport and transferred to your hotel.

If you have an early arrival, you can explore Nouakchott including the Al Khaima City Center, Fish Market and the Souvenir Market. Meals are not included on this day, but can be arranged at hotels or restaurants as needed.

Day 2Akjoujt / Azoueiga

After breakfast, you will leave the city and head towards the Sahara Desert. Your first stop will be the caves of Akjoujt, where you will enjoy a leisurely al-fresco picnic lunch experience.

After lunch, you will head to the famous dunes of Azoueiga. Climbing the beautiful sand dune and staring across the endless Sahara Desert as the sun sets is a breathtaking once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Your campsite will be set up for an overnight under the spectacular Sahara sky. Dinner will be freshly cooked and served to you.

Day 3White Valley / Oasis of Terjit / Ichive Valley

This morning, you have another opportunity to climb the Azoueiga dune while breakfast is being prepared and the campsite is packed away for you.

Drive through the beautiful landscapes of the White Valley until you reach Terjit where you will enjoy a picnic lunch in the oasis.

After lunch, you can ride a camel or walk beside the camel for about an hour toward the Ichive Valley. Here you will spend the night in outdoor tents. Dinner will be freshly cooked and served to you.

Day 4Mhairith Oasis / Canyon of Amogjar / Chinguetti

If you missed the camel ride on the previous day, then you can ride on the camel this morning. Your destination this morning is the Mhairth Oasis, which is one of the largest oases in the Adrar region. The oasis is beautifully surrounded by palm groves and is situated between rocks and sand dunes. Here you will have free time to swim in the oasis or relax while a lunch is prepared for you in the oasis.

After lunch, you will visit the Canyon of Amogjar in the Adrar plateau. Here you will have a spectacular panoramic view of the canyon. Next, you will visit the nearby Agrour Amogjar to see a collection of neolithic rock paintings.

Depart for the ancient city of Chinguetti to witness a memorable sunset from the top of a massive sand dune. You will spend the night and have dinner in a basic guesthouse.

Day 5Chinguetti / Richat Structure / Ouadane

This morning, you will explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Chinguetti. This ancient city is known as a historic trading post, a noted Islamic scholarly centre, and a former gathering place for pilgrims on their way to Mecca. Visit the old town library where ancient texts are being preserved. You can also visit the old city mosque that was built in the 13th century.

Travel along the ancient trans-Saharan caravan trade route toward the oasis of Tanouchert. Here you will stop for lunch in a nomadic tent.

After lunch, continue along the caravan trade route towards Ouadane. Continue your journey toward the Richat Structure, also known as “the Eye of Africa”. This is a massive circular landmark that is visible from space. Return to Ouadane where you will have dinner and spend the night in a guesthouse.

Day 6Ouadane / Atar / Monolith Ben Amera

After an early breakfast, you will visit the old city of Ouadane, which was a former staging post. Walk through the ruins of the upper and lower sections of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Next, you will drive to the town of Atar, which is the capital of the Adrar region. Here you will visit the local market to observe city life and for some souvenir shopping, if desired.

Afterwards, you will travel to the famous Ben Amera monolith located near the Western Sahara border. Thisis Africa’s largest monolith, and the world’s second largest monolith. You will also visit the lesser Ben Aisha monolith located nearby. Be sure to walk alongside the base of Ben Aisha to marvel at the many rock carvings and rock sculptures created by a dozen international artists in 1999 to celebrate the millennium. You will enjoy lunch here.

When you are ready, you will head westbound and spend the night camping in the desert. Dinner will be freshly cooked and served.

Day 7Cap Blanc / Nouadhibou

This morning, you will continue driving through the Sahara Desert toward the coast of Mauritania.

Once you have reached the coast, you will visit Cap Blanc which means “white headland”. It is located on a 60-kilometer (37-miles) peninsula which divides the border between Mauritania and Western Sahara. The iconic lighthouse was constructed in 1910. Take in the spectacular sea view especially after spending several nights in the Sahara Desert.

When you are ready, you will be transferred to Nouadhibou, the second largest city in Mauritania. Here you will enjoy dinner and spend the night in a hotel.

Day 8Nouadhibou / Chami / Tafarit / Banc d'Arguin National Park

After breakfast, you will head toward Chami. This entire village was birthed and developed due to the gold mining activities in the region. Here you will drive through the village to watch from a distance the processing and refining of stones collected from gold mines.

Next, you will drive toward the Banc d’Arguin National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lunch will be served at a small oceanside restaurant at Cape Tafarit. You will have a free afternoon to soak up the sun, take a walk along the pristine beach, or to take a swim in the Atlantic.

Depart for the village of Iwik which is known for fishing using traditional methods. Here you will have dinner and also spend the night in a cottage.

Day 9Iwik / Nouamgar / Nouakchott

After breakfast, you will board a traditional sailboat for an Atlantic ocean excursion. The sailboat will take you to nearby islands where you can see migratory birds and breeding birds including pink flamingos, pelicans and terns. The sailing trip is approximately 2-4 hours long, but may be longer or shorter depending on weather conditions.

Once you’re back on land, you will drive toward the village of Nouamgar. Here you will have a picnic lunch while enjoying the beautiful surrounding scenery.

Next, depart to Nouakchott where you will have dinner and spend the night in a hotel or guesthouse.

Day 10Departure from Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport for departure.

If you have a late departure, you can visit explore Nouakchott and surrounding sites.

Lunch and dinner are not included on this day but can be arranged at a restaurant in Nouakchott as needed.
