Here are some highlights of what you will see and experience on the Ancient Roman Algeria and Tunisia Tour
Arrive to Algiers and transfer to hotel for two nights. Depending on your arrival time, we can take a city tour, which will visit sites such as the Notre Dame d’Afrique, the French colonial architecture, and the Palais des Rais. If you have an early morning arrival, you will visit the Kasbah in the afternoon. Dinner will be taken at your hotel.

After breakfast, you will travel to Tipaza to explore this beautiful Roman site beside the Mediterranean Sea and then visit the museum. You will not want to miss the historic basilica, which is said to be the largest in North Africa. If you enjoy seafood you may want to try out a local restaurant for a fresh fish lunch in Tipaza.
Continue on to Cherchell to visit two archaeology museums that hosts a number of Roman antiquities. On your way back to Algiers, you will stop at the pyramid-like structure of the Tomb de le Christian.

Today you will have an early morning departure in order to wind through the Kabilye mountain range and then on to Djemila. The first stop will be in Setif is to visit the National Museum of Archaeology which hosts the remarkable and intact mosaic Procession of Bacchus. Continue to the UNESCO World Hertiage site of Djemila which has two basilicas and a covered baptistery. Do not miss the Roman theatre, fountain, and intact ancient Roman marketplace. You will have a guided visit of Djemila, including the museum and site. Travel to Constantine for night.

Explore the hillside Roman archaeological site of Tiddis which offers excellent views over the region. You will begin by walking through the arch and to the sanctuary of Mithras, Christian basilica, and Roman houses.
Return to Constantine for a half day city tour and visit the museum of Cirta. You will explore the breathtaking suspension bridges and gorge, Kasbah, and Palace of Ahmed Bey.

Today you will want to depart early to have sufficient time at all the sites. Begin with a stop at Medracen (Ancient Numidian Tomb), which is 58 meters in diameter and 19 meters tall. Then travel to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Timgad, begun by Emperor Trajan in AD100, where you will discover the library, temples, amphitheater, arch of Trajan, forum, houses, and basilicas.
On your return to Lambaesis, you will visit the large structure of the legionary base. Return to Constantine for night.

In the morning, you will travel to Madauros, where St. Augustine studied as a child. After exploring the site, you will travel to Souk Aharas where you will find a collection of monuments pertaining to St. Augustine’s life. This might be a great strop for lunch in this city and then travel on to Annaba for night.

Today in the morning, you will visit the archaeological site of Hippo Regius. Here you will find the Basilica of Peace where Augustine was bishop from AD 395-430. You will also tour the museum, and the Cathedral of St. Augustine, which was renovated and reopened 2012. A relic of St. Augustine’s forearm is enclosed in a large statue of Augustine. When you have completed your tour, you will travel to the Algeria/Tunisia border.
You will meet your Tunisia driver and guide at the northern border. You will then travel to the coastal town of Tabarka for an afternoon of rest. You may want to see the unique rock spirals found in Tabarka. Dinner will be at the hotel.

After breakfast, the group will visit Bulla Regia, where you will find a basilica and a theater that Augustine spoke out against in one of his sermons. Here you will also explore unique underground villas. When you have completed your visit, you will travel to Dougga for lunch and a site tour. Dougga, the Roman Archaeological site is one of the best preserved Roman ruins in Tunisia, and it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. After your tour, you will travel to the coastal town of Sousse. Dinner will be in the hotel.

Begin the day with breakfast at the hotel and then explore the Sousse archeological museum, and take note of the intact Byzantine baptistery. There are fantastic views from the museum of the historic medina in Sousse. The next stop will be the El Jem coliseum and museum. This coliseum is said to have had seating for up to 30,000 spectators and is the best preserved in the Roman world. After your visits, you will return to Tunis. Dinner will be at the hotel.

In the morning, travel to Carthage in order to visit the sites such as the Roman Amphitheater (where Felicity and her companions were martyred in March 207AD), the Roman baths, and early churches. Be sure not to miss the Carthage Museum found on Bysra Hill with beautiful views of the Sea.
You may want to have lunch in picturesque ‘blue and white’ town of Sidi Bou Said and then travel back to Tunis. Spend the afternoon in the Bardo Museum., which has a large collection of antiquities found all throughout Tunisia. Dinner will be at the hotel.
