Overall, the four people in our group had a nice vacation while visiting much of Tunisia, but we also had some hiccups, no show stoppers. We saw amazing archeological sites and museums, stayed in some nice accommodations, saw many interesting dwellings, cities, towns and olive tree plantations.
I cannot say enough good things about Nadhem and Lotfi, our guide and driver. They were both exceptional and went well beyond the normal call of duty. I was quite impressed with Nadhem’s general knowledge of Tunisia and his in-depth knowledge of archeological and historical information on the many sites we saw including the couple of Star Wars sites! Lotfi has an unbelievable work effort; daily cleaning his van and getting the car fixed at the end of a long day. Lotfi and Nadhem work very well together and have wonderful dispositions.
I appreciate that within the hotels we had half-board (i.e., breakfast and dinner) included. Some hotels had better rooms, meals and pleasant staff than others. The guest houses didn’t work out as well as the hotels.
I enjoyed going to some but not all souks and medinas. The smaller less crowded souks and medinas in the towns were more enjoyable because I could walk pleasantly and interact with the shop owner without being concerned about being hit by two and three wheeled motor scouters in the bigger souks or trampled by the crowds.
I enjoyed all museums that we visited and in particular the museum in Sousse. This museum had extraordinary mosaics and stelas. I also found the visit to the American North African Cemetery and Mareth Military museums as unexpected surprises because they were both interesting and educational.
Overall, I have been telling people I had a pleasant vacation in Tunisia. There were amazing things to see that you wouldn’t find elsewhere in the world. However, I also tell people that Tunisia is a third world country with quite varied economic conditions throughout, lacks English speaking people (not a problem if you speak French or Arabic), is a cash economy, and has a limited choice of good restaurants and accommodations in areas other than major cities.
