Tunisia packs quite a punch for a small country.  Deep history, well preserved ruins, lovely people, geographically diverse and a good infrastructure.

This was a full 10 day solo tour covering many areas not typically visited by those on a shorter tour.  If one only has a few days it’s better than not seeing Tunisia, but, I’m happy I took a deeper dive with a longer tour.

Airport pick up and drop off can be tricky but both were handled professionally.

My guide Adel made a good trip a great one.  Certainly knowledgeable with perfect English but he went above and beyond on many occasions.  I walk with a cane so sites with uneven stairs or no handrails (Roman builders didn’t think of everything) were a challenge.  He was patient and always ready with a helping hand. I would not have seen as much without his help.  He also made his culture and heritage come alive.  No request was too big or small, whether finding an authentic Tunisia silk rug, a fricassee sandwich or a return to a Star Wars site for better pictures.

There were many highlights.  The Bardo Museum mosaics are breathtaking.  El Gem is of course a must see and because handrails are installed thru much of the structure I was able to explore on my own.  The baths in Mactaris were stunning.  And as a Star Wars fan seeing Luke’s house was a special nerd moment.

A pleasant surprise was the geographically beautiful landscape. Deep canyons, mountains, desert, the Mediterranean; it changed every few days. I thoroughly enjoyed the local wine, olive oil and cheese. And of course wonderful bread.

I booked 2 hotel only days at the beginning and end something I always do.  It helps acclimate at the beginning and relax before the trip home.

Some of the hotels were among the best I’ve ever frequented. The Anantara Resort Tozeur was stunning, a true oasis.  The Movenpick Resort Sousse was only fair.   It’s a sprawling complex made for large groups and families. They allow smoking in the lobby and, inexplicably, at the bar inside the main dining room.  I loved La Badira, the final hotel.   Tranquil, great food and wine, lovely staff and a wonderful spa.

My only caution for future clients is L’Auberge de Tamezret.  It’s a guest house built into the mountain but because of mobility issues it was difficult to navigate uneven floors even in my room.  Had it been for more than one night I would have asked Adel for other accommodations.  For those with no mobility problems it would be a wholly unique experience in a stunning setting. The dinner was exceptional, the hosts charming and accommodating.

I highly recommend Tunisia and Mosaic North Africa.  After confirming the itinerary they managed all the logistics and bookings.  I had to cancel this trip last year close to departure but when rescheduled it was rebooked within a few days.  As a solo traveler I’m used to paying a premium price but I got great value for a bespoke trip.

Tunisia was my 113th country including extensive travel thru Africa and the Middle East. One can think they’ve “seen it all”.  I came because of the history but learned so much more.

The only negative part had nothing to do with Mosaic.  My Tunisair departure was delayed three hours due to mechanical issues and I missed a London connection.  It was sorted but I ended up overnighting in London.
