In the southern province of the Tunisian city of Tataouine, lies the ancient granary Ksar Ouled Soltane. Built by the Berbers in the 15th century, Ksar Ouled Soltane is a very well-preserved mud-faced fortified granary or ghorfa. The use of multi-level granaries in this region was significant for food storage.
Ksar Ouled Soltane is spread over two courtyards. The outdoor staircases and the various levels of the ghorfa make this the perfect site to explore. Its construction and color perfectly blend with the colors of the hillside. The windswept building is located in a relatively secluded place. In the past, it served both as protection and as a cool shelter from the scourging heat in the Sahara Desert.
The sun-bleached walls, the winding staircases, the multiple floors, and the sands surrounding it all seemed to be the perfect settings of a science-fiction movie. This is exactly what put Ksar Ouled Soltane on the map for travelers from all around the world to visit.
These incredible buildings appear to belong to another world which inspired George Lucas when he was filming Star Wars. Ksar Ouled Soltane was used as a backdrop in Star Wars as the slave quarters in the Phantom Menace and the place where Anakin and his mother lived.
If you are traveling with children this is an excellent place to take them as they will be delighted to explore the staircases. Ksar Ouled Soltane also offers excellent photo opportunities especially at sunset with the shifting colors on the buildings.
