Chebika is an oasis that lies at the foot of the Djebel el Negueb mountains. It was once a Roman outpost, but later became a mountain refuge for the Berber people. Only several hundred people live in this city today.
Chebika is located about 50 kilometers away from Tozeur, which is a common starting point for tourists to depart from Tozeur on 4×4 vehicles to Chebika. Upon arriving in Chebika, local guides can take you on a 40-minute walk to a waterfall. Take time to marvel at the river flowing from the rocks and naturally watering the palm tree grove. It is simply amazing to see the tranquil blue water within the mountains.
After a climb up the mountain, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view overlooking the mountain, the oasis, and the Chott El Jerid salt flat.
It is no wonder that Chebika is a popular hiking area. Advanced hikers may also choose to hike across several mountains while living in tents overnight. Most travellers visiting Chebika also take time to visit the nearby mountain canyons of Tamerza and Mides. If you’re staying overnight in Tozeur or Nefta, then it makes for a great day excursion to explore and hike all the mountains of Chebika, Tamerza and Mides.
