Spend the Night at a Former British Embassy

Thanks to preservation efforts, this 17th century building has been refined to its former glory. The moment you step inside this Moorish refined hotel, you will immediately notice the beautifully tiled panels and the charming decorations and artwork, which have retained all the glamour and elegance of its past.

Walking through the entire hotel feels like you are in a historic museum marveling at its architectural character and about 400 years of history as a former British consulate building.

Hotel Royal Victoria is more than just a hotel – it is a historic landmark formerly occupied by the British embassy.

There is a plaque from the British Tunisian Society located outside the hotel which reads:

A Treaty between the Dey, and the Bey and the Soldiers of Tunis, and King Charles II enabled Britain to maintain a Consular, later Diplomatic presence on this site from 1662 to 2004.

Centrally Located By the Old Walled City and the European-Styled New City

Located in the heart of downtown Tunis, Hotel Royal Victoria overlooks Bab el Bhar (the sea gate), also known as Porte De France (the gate of France). This historic gate is one of the main entrances into the Medina of Tunis, which was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. This gateway sits at the conjunction where two worlds of old and new come together.

On one side, there is the historic Medina quarter with 700 monuments dating from the Almohad and the Hafsid periods.

On the other side, there is the European-styled new city, known as ville nouvelle in French, with the famous Avenue Habib Bourguiba being the large thoroughfare of Tunis and representing the historical political and economic heart of the country.

Needless to say, the hotel location is ideal for exploring the historic part of the city. Spend the morning roaming through the cobblestones of the Tunis Medina. Make your way through narrow lanes and alleyways stumbling upon local artisans of copper, leather, and wool. The famous Zitouna Mosque, spice market, and gold market are sites you don’t want to miss.
