Troglodyte Homes in Matmata

The uniqueness of Matmata centers around the Troglodyte homes.  Troglodyte homes are homes made underground with, chimney-like, courtyard openings to the sky.  These homes were traditionally made for locals to escape the coolness of winter and the heat of summer, where temperatures can reach 50 C. Living underground takes the edge off the extreme weather.

Hotel Marhala is a 3★ hotel and offers you a chance to experience life, Troglodyte style.  The hotel is a Troglodyte Labyrinth with connecting different cave-like areas together. In each courtyard, you will find many clean cave rooms, which are the hotel rooms. With your stay comes a traditional supper and breakfast.  The delicious Tunisian courses never seem to end with Brik, Couscous, soup, and more. The friendly staffs also make the stay worthwhile. We were lucky and got to hear one of the local musicians playing his oud (pear-shaped guitar) in one of the courtyards. If you love new experiences that are unlike any other you need to add a stay at Hotel Marhala to your list.
