Most of what Mosaic North Africa runs is private, custom-dated travel. In October 2027, we’re making an exception: a single fixed-date Algeria small group tour, guided by our own Algeria-based team, open to a maximum of 15 travellers.
Algeria is home to some of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable and best preserved ancient sites, yet its archaeological treasures remain largely unexplored by Western travellers.
What makes this tour particularly rare is the opportunity to experience several of Algeria’s major Roman sites in one carefully connected journey, from the coastal ruins of Tipaza to Tiddis, Timgad, Lambaesis and the UNESCO listed city of Djemila, rather than seeing a single site as a standalone excursion.
Along the way, discover the dramatic landscapes and distinctive character of Constantine and Algiers, while uncovering layers of Roman, Numidian and early Christian history.
For travellers, this means going beyond the familiar Mediterranean to experience extraordinary ancient sites in their original landscapes, with private transportation, domestic flights and a licensed English speaking guide making it possible to explore parts of Algeria that can be challenging to visit independently.
Your driver meets you on arrival and takes you straight to your hotel.
At 2:00 pm, meet in the hotel lobby to begin your orientation tour of downtown Algiers. Discover the Grand Poste, historic mosques, the port and the Monument of the Martyrs. If time permits, visit the Basilica of Notre Dame d’Afrique (Basilica of Our Lady of Africa) before returning to the hotel.
In the evening, enjoy a group dinner at a local restaurant. Dinner is not included.
The day begins in Cherchell, once the capital of the Numidian kingdoms, where you’ll enjoy a guided visit to its archaeological museum. Continue to Tipaza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of North Africa’s most spectacular coastal Roman sites. Explore its ancient Roman road along the Mediterranean, site museum and impressive basilica, one of the largest in Africa.
On the return journey to Algiers, stop at the pyramid shaped Royal Mausoleum of Mauretania before continuing to the airport for a late afternoon or evening flight to Annaba. Upon arrival, your driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel.
The day begins in Annaba, once an important Phoenician and Roman port, with a visit to Hippo Regius. Explore the archaeological museum and its remarkable collection of Roman mosaics, then walk among the ruins of the Basilica of Peace, where St. Augustine served as bishop in the late 4th and early 5th centuries.
Nearby, visit the Basilica of St. Augustine, built between 1881 and 1900 and known for its striking stained glass windows depicting scenes from his life.
After exploring Annaba and its ancient surroundings, travel west to Constantine, arriving in the late afternoon or evening. Settle into your hotel and enjoy the evening in Constantine.
This morning, travel to Tiddis, a remarkable Roman hillside settlement overlooking the surrounding landscape. Explore the ancient site on foot, passing through its triumphal arch and along the original Roman road. Continue past the sanctuary of Mithras, Christian basilica, private homes, water tanks and small forum, gaining a sense of daily life in this remote Roman settlement.
Return to Constantine in the afternoon for a city tour. Visit the Museum of Cirta, take in the dramatic suspension bridges spanning the Rhumel Gorge, and explore the historic Kasbah and the elegant Palace of Ahmed Bey.
Depart early this morning and travel south toward Timgad and Lambaesis, with a stop along the way at Medracen, an impressive Numidian tomb measuring approximately 58 metres across and 19 metres high.
Continue to Timgad, one of Algeria’s most remarkable Roman cities. Explore its well preserved ruins, including the ancient library, temples, amphitheatre and the monumental Arch of Trajan.
From Timgad, continue to Lambaesis to discover the remains of the Roman legionary base and learn about the military role this important settlement played in the Roman Empire.
After a full day exploring some of Algeria’s most significant Roman sites, settle into your accommodation in Timgad for the night.
Today, travel to Djemila, meaning “beautiful” in Arabic, and discover a spectacular Roman city set among rolling hills. A guided visit explores both the archaeological site and museum, with highlights including the forum, basilicas, baptisteries, Arch of Caracalla, Temple of Septimius Severus, well preserved market and ancient theatre.
Continue to Setif, where the Archaeological Museum houses an exceptional collection of Roman mosaics, including the famous Triumph of Dionysos.
Enjoy an early breakfast before departing at 8:00 am for Algiers. Upon arrival, continue exploring the capital with a visit to the historic Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with other highlights of Algiers.
The day continues with further sightseeing in the city before returning to the hotel. Dinner is on your own this evening.
At the appropriate time, transfer to the airport for your flight departure, bringing your Algerian journey to a close.
