3 Oasis Towns in Tunisia to Visit

Southern Tunisia boasts incredible Oasis towns and cities that should be explored! There are activities for whole families to enjoy in this region from camel trekking, to quad rides, train ride through stunning gorges, and beautiful walks through these ancient groves. The best time to travel to Oasis towns in Tunisia is from September to November or March to May when the weather is not as hot. It is also a great place to come for Christmas or New Year’s when many of the hotel offer special dinners. Below are three towns/cities that should not be missed if you are in the Oasis region of Tunisia.

1. Tozeur: Watered from over 200 springs, Tozeur has at least 200,000 date palms. Take a walk, rent a bike, or take a carriage ride through a palmeraie and enjoy watching the ancient art of irrigating the trees from the underground springs. If you are traveling with kids there is a small desert museum, or visit the Chak Wak park. Don’t miss a walk through the Ouled el-Hadef where you can enjoy the traditional architecture in Tozeur.

2. Tamerza: Situated in a picturesque valley, Tamerza is famous for waterfalls and make sure you don’t leave without taking a dip in the cool waters. You can take day trip hikes from Tamerza or sit back walk through this photographic town. Stay at the 5★ Hotel Tamerza Palace for great views over the oasis and enjoy local cuisine.

3. Douz: Also known as the gateway to the desert, Douz is conveniently located by the gorgeous Sahara sand dunes. Douz holds the biggest palmery with over half a million date palms. In December, you can visit Douz and watch the Sahara desert festival with camel racing and other events rich in the Sahara culture. For those seeking adventure, take a quad trip into the dunes or go for a parasail ride.
