Ksar Hadada - Mos Espa's Slave Quarters in Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace

Tunisia and its part of the Sahara Desert are full of places that are unlike any other place in the world. This is the reason why George Lucas fell in love with those places and they perfectly depicted his vision for the Star Wars film locations.

There are in total 9 Star Wars film locations in Tunisia and many of the decors are still where they were left. One thing that is fascinating when you visit these locations is that the majority of the population has never seen the movies. However, the settings are being kept with the hope that they will instill tourist live in the region.

By visiting these three landmark locations, it will make you feel part of this incredible movie experience and will take you back to specific scenes.

Luke Skywalker’s Home

Luke’s home settings are actually a Troglodyte home that still exists and is located in the city of Matmata. If you remember this was a series of underground caves transformed into vaulted rooms. Today these dwellings are turned into a hotel by the name of Sidi Driss and you can stay for a night here for a modest price. By entering the Sidi Driss hotel you will be stunned by its quietness and the fact that these are real buildings and not the typical Universal Studios’ re-creation.

In case the Sidi Driss is full, there are several Troglodytes scattered around the area of Matmata and any of these will be glad to accommodate you for an evening. We recommend the Hotel Marhala just up the road from Sidi Driss. If you are a luxury lover, there is a 4* troglodyte hotel in a neighbouring town. For the true Star Wars fan, a stay of this sort will leave a one of a kind memory.

On the Tatooine Moon

Guermessa is an abandoned Berber village set on the top of a hill overlooking an incredibly beautiful valley. This is also one of the names of the three Tatooine moons. The other two named by real cities too- Chenini and Ghromrassen. Guermessa has several Troglodytes that can be rented for a night stay and you might be able to enjoy the surroundings in your own company. Keep in mind that these are places where you would be walking extensively as there are no roads but sand. It’s the desert after all.

The Real Town of Tatouine

There is indeed a Tunisian city by the name of Tatouine. It’s a thrilling place is located in the south part of the country and has been used for the filming of the Mos Espa slavery quarters. The area is known for its multiple fortified castles called Ksars. It is the Ksar Hadada and the Ksar Hallouf where any true Star Wars fan should spend time exploring. For an even more fulfilling experience, the buildings in these Ksars have been transformed into hotels and are offered for a one night stay.
