Country Tours - Meknes Morocco

Meknes Morocco photo 1Meknes, once an imperial city, is often overlooked by travelers but is well worth the visit. This city's famous history dates to the late 1600's and the rule of Moulay Ismail. Many of walls and gates that can still be seen were built through slave labor. Those under his leadership lived in great fear and as many historical accounts detail, one wrong move could result in death. Visitors can still explore the underground prison and the mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. The well-preserved and enormous Bab el-Mansour Gate is a must see. Opposite the gate is the ancient medina and open square which becomes a lively place at night. A unique way to see the city is by horse and carriage... a 45 minute tour of the city that passes most of the major sites and the Mellah (Jewish quarter).
